Today is the birthday of Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko, the great son of the Ukrainian people.  Tomorrow is the anniversary of his death.  Ukrainians are an extremely vital, undying nation.  We have been awakened by Shevchenko’s word.  By it, he reminded and continues to remind us of our past and present, that we had and have a glorious history, high culture, subtle intelligence, and a refined taste.

    This is despite the fact that Ukrainians, subjugated by all who seized opportunity, nevertheless have arisen from the dust.  They have emerged in all parts of the world.  There, they have given voice to the instrument of their own soul.  Although flowing into the powerful stream of world culture, Ukrainians have not lost their uniqueness, their identity—their national “I”.

     On the eve of these Shevchenko anniversaries, the Ukrainian American Club of Washington organized a Shevchenko evening which took place yesterday on the premises of Seattle Pacific University.  Its author was Tatyana Shadyrya.  After presenters traced the deeply tragic biography of the genius, the audience had the opportunity not only to listen to these words about Shevchenko but also to hear songs composed of his poems.

     It seemed as if we were back in a small part of Ukraine—as if we had never left home.  There were the embroideries and the fellowship before and after.  A portrait of the Kobzar hung just above a kobza which, thanks to Alex Krynytzky’s sincere and soulful playing, produced such unrepeatable sounds.  Mr. Ihor Shevchenko, recognizing the deep responsibility of bearing the Ukrainian genius’ name, expressed thanks to those who organized the celebration.

     Mr. Myron Pylypiak, founder and director of the first Ukrainian Self-Reliance Credit Union in this region, explained the advantages and conditions of membership.

     Mr. Hlib Chaykovsky, an American resident for ten years, told of his family’s being driven to Siberia.  He told of the Ukrainian community in Kolym, headed by his father, a professor in the university there.  Ukrainians in that city have begun publishing their own newspaper, of which two numbers have appeared.  Of course, the eternal problem is financing.  Perhaps there will emerge enthusiastic sponsors who will want to support the Ukrainian spirit in that cold Siberian land.

     Mr. Eugene Lemcio had the opportunity to share with us his plans for endowing a Professorship of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Washington.  We have children, grandchildren, and others who care about their future in this land.  Obviously, we must support one of our own, who has already been able to establish an authoritative presence in the academic circles of Seattle.  It has been the service of Mr. Lemcio to enable Ukrainians to celebrate their holidays in the context of the university.

     Let us love one another and our own selves.  This is a founding principle of Christianity and an important condition for preserving ourselves as a nationality.  Let us attend Ukrainian holidays and support their organizers.  Let us take the initiative, organizing them ourselves.  Everything that we do is in the first instance being done for ourselves.  Only thus will we be able to keep from losing ourselves in this stormy sea of the world’s cultures.

Вшанування Генія

Сьогодні - день народження Тараса Григоровича Шевченка, великого сина українського народу.  Завтра - день його смерті.  Українці - надто живуча, а значить і невмируща нація.  Розбуджені Шевченковим словом, який нагадав і нагадує до сьогодні, що ми мали і маємо славну історію, високу культуру, витончену інтелегентність, вишуканий смак;  українці, нищені ким завгодно, постаючи із попелу, виринають у всіх частинах світу, заявляючи голосним, дзвінким струменем своєї душі, вливаючись у потужний потік світової культури, не втрачаючи своєї неповторності, самобутності, свого національного "я".

Напередодні Шевченкових роковин український американський клуб штату Вашингтон зорганізував Шевченківський вечір, який відбувся учора, в приміщенні університету Вашингтона.  Автор сценарію - Татьяна Шадиря.  Глядачі мали змогу почути Шевченківське слово, пісні на його вірші, вже вкотре послухали його біографію, глибоко трагічну біографію генія.

Вишиванки, портрет Кобзаря і кобза, її неповторні звуки, щиро і від душі творені п. Криницьким, спілкування до початку і після концерту дали змогу відчути себе в маленькій Україні.  Так ніби і не їхав з дому.  П. Ігор Шевченко, відчуваючи глибоку відповідальність мати співзвучне із генієм України прізвище, а також вдячність організаторам свята, виступив із словом подяки.

П. Мирон Пилип"як розповів про заснований ним перший на цих теренах український банк, про умови вступу і переваги перебування в ньому.

П. Гліб Чайковський, який в Америці вже 10 років, а родина його була колись вивежена до Сибіру, розповів про українське згромадження на Колимі, яке очолює батько п. Гліба, професор тамтешнього університету.  Українці Колими розпочали видавати свою газету.  Вийшло два номери.  Вічна проблема - кошти.  Можливо знайдуться ентузіасти, які захочуть підтримати український дух у холодній сибірській землі.

П. Євген Лемцьо мав нагоду поділитися своїми планами щодо запровадження посади професора українознавства в Університеті Вашингтон.  Маємо дітей, онуків і, дбаючи про їхнє майбутнє на цій землі, мусимо, очевидно, підтримати свою людину, яка вже зуміла здобути авторитет в наукових колах Сіетла.  Власне, що усі свята українці можуть проводити в стінах університету,- заслуга п. Лемця.

Любім один одного і самих себе.  Це важлива засада християнства і важлива умова збереження себе, як нації.  Ходімо на українські свята, підтримуймо організаторів, самі організовуймо, проявляймо ініціативу.  Усе, що зроблено - це, в першу чергу,- для самих себе.  Щоб не загубити себе у цьому бурхливому морі усіх культур світу…
